I remember seeing these guys so many times growing up. I loved the first incarnation with Mark Olson, great guy, very kind and talented. His wife Victoria Williams is one of my biggest all time artistic inspirations, such a phenomenal human being, and a person whose words can consistently reduce me to tears. I think when really simple lessons in life are expressed in beautiful, melancholic ways, it is very moving. i can be such a crybaby with that. Listen to 'Century Plant' for instance. Those are all real stories expressed in simple form. The last parable in the song is about a fellow that wasn't able to communicate with his wife while she was alive. it was the day that she passed on that his life really began, and found himself closer to her in her absence- the regret that accompanied that realization, and the subsequent reconcilliation by then living the rest of his life to the fullest in her honor.
you might be familiar with eddie vedder's version of 'Crazy Mary' and it's great, but really, Victoria's original is, well, real. many artists have covered her songs, but the exigence of them are so personal it's a tough thing to do by nature of that simple fact.
I owe all of these guys a big thanks.
